Wrong Date of Birth on CIBIL Report: Fix It | Credit Reveals

Of everything that can go wrong on a credit report, a mismatched date of birth sounds like the least of your problems, it's just a date, after all, not a balance or a status. But that date quietly feeds into more calculations than people realise. Lenders use it to work out your maximum loan tenure, since most loans are capped to end before a certain retirement age, and it can factor into how insurance-linked credit products price your premium too. Get the date wrong, and you may never know why a loan tenure came back shorter than expected, or why an application hit an unexplained snag, the DOB field is rarely where people think to look first.

Why the Wrong DOB Ends Up There

CIBIL doesn't independently know your date of birth or decide what it should be, it only reflects whatever the lender reported. That single fact explains most of what follows.

A wrong DOB in a lender's own customer or KYC records is the most common starting point, a simple entry error at the time you applied. Sometimes it traces back further than that, to inconsistent dates across your own KYC documents themselves, where your Aadhaar, PAN, and passport don't all agree with each other, and whichever one the lender happened to reference became what got reported. Other times you did get it corrected once, but only with one lender, an old DOB can keep sitting in another institution's records indefinitely if nobody told them to update it. It's also common for different lenders to simply report different dates for the same person, particularly if you've held credit with several institutions over the years. And in rarer cases, the mismatch isn't really about your date at all, someone else's information has gotten linked to your profile, and their DOB is showing up as yours.

One Thing Worth Flagging Before You Assume It's Simple

If the wrong DOB is the only thing off on an otherwise familiar report, this is almost certainly a straightforward correction, the same kind of fix we've covered for a wrong name on your report. But if it's showing up alongside an account you don't recognise, or other personal details that don't look right either, treat that combination seriously, it's less likely to be a simple DOB typo and more likely a sign that someone else's profile has gotten mixed into yours. That's a different kind of problem, and it's worth reading our guide on unknown accounts if that's the pattern you're actually seeing.

How to Get It Corrected

Start with the standard CIBIL dispute, flagging it under Personal Information, or use the online complaint method if your report is older or came from a third-party platform. Most DOB corrections resolve cleanly at this stage.

Emailing CIBIL Directly

Our drafting tool covers this under Credit Bureau — Individual — CIBIL — Inaccurate Date of Birth Reported. Here's the kind of email it generates:

To: nodalofficer@transunion.com, escalationdesk@transunion.com

Emailing the Lender That Reported It

Once CIBIL confirms which lender the incorrect date came from, contact them directly too, remember, they're the actual source of the data, so a correction on their end is what makes the fix stick. Bank or lender — Union Bank of India — Inaccurate Date of Birth Reported. Here's the kind of email that goes out, using Union Bank of India as an example:

To: customercare@unionbankofindia.bank.in, pno@unionbankofindia.bank.in

If It's Still Not Resolved

These steps handle the vast majority of DOB corrections. If yours genuinely isn't sorted after going through both, raise it with CPGRAMS next, and the RBI Ombudsman after that if CPGRAMS doesn't move things along either, the same escalation sequence we've covered for every other correction on this site.

Does This Apply to Other Bureaus?

Yes, the same DOB mismatch can independently show up on your Experian, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark report, since each bureau maintains its own record fed by the same lenders. Worth checking all four once you've confirmed the correct date, rather than assuming a CIBIL fix carries over automatically, especially since each bureau's score rarely lines up exactly anyway, which is itself a sign of how independently these four records are actually maintained.

Worth Getting Right

A wrong date of birth looks like the most forgettable error a credit report can have, but it quietly touches things like loan tenure eligibility that most people never connect back to this one field. Fix it the same way as any other correction, dispute with CIBIL first, follow up with the reporting lender directly, and escalate through CPGRAMS and the RBI Ombudsman only if it genuinely stalls. And if the wrong DOB shows up next to anything else unfamiliar, don't treat it as a routine typo, that combination deserves a closer look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a wrong date of birth actually matter to a lender?

Because your age directly factors into things like maximum loan tenure, since many loans are structured to close out before a set retirement age. A wrong DOB can quietly shift what tenure you're offered, or complicate age-linked pricing on insurance-backed credit products, without ever being flagged as the actual cause.

My Aadhaar, PAN, and passport all show slightly different dates, which one should I use for the correction?

Use whichever document you're treating as your primary proof, and make sure it's consistent going forward. If your own documents disagree with each other, it's worth getting them aligned independently of the CIBIL correction, since that same inconsistency is likely what caused the mismatch in the first place.

I corrected my DOB with one bank already, why does it still show wrong on CIBIL?

Because each lender reports independently, and CIBIL only reflects what it's told. If the correction only happened with one institution, any other lender that reported your data with the old date will keep showing it until they specifically update it too.

The wrong DOB is showing up along with an account I don't recognise, should I still just file a DOB correction?

Not on its own, no. That combination is worth taking more seriously, it can point to a mixed or overlapping profile rather than a simple date error. Deal with the unrecognised account through the proper unknown-account process first, since the DOB issue may resolve alongside it.

Does CIBIL decide my date of birth, or can I just tell them directly what it should be?

CIBIL doesn't independently determine it, the date always comes from whatever the lender reported. That's exactly why the correction has to route through the reporting lender eventually, not just CIBIL alone.

How long should I wait before escalating to CPGRAMS?

Give the standard dispute and the email to CIBIL a reasonable window first, if it's still unresolved after that, CPGRAMS is the next step, with the RBI Ombudsman as the final one if CPGRAMS doesn't resolve it either.
