CIBIL Mobile Number Update: Fix Wrong Number
Scroll down to the Contact Details section of your CIBIL report and you might find a phone number sitting there that genuinely isn't yours, or one that used to be yours years ago and never got updated. Neither is dramatic on its own, but both are worth fixing. A mismatched contact number is a small detail that can quietly complicate identity verification the next time a lender needs to reach you.
Why the Wrong Number Ends Up There in the First Place
Most of the time, this comes down to something fairly mundane rather than anything sinister. A data-mismatch during processing at the bureau's end is common enough on its own. So is a straightforward typo, a lender's staff entering one digit wrong while filling in your loan or card application. Sometimes it's not wrong so much as outdated, an old number that's still genuinely yours and still works, in which case there's actually no correction needed, since a number you can still access isn't really an error, just a stale one.
Other times it's a bit stranger. A friend's or family member's number gets entered instead of yours, often because that was the number handed over during a rushed application. There are cases where a loan agent or bank staff member has clearly just typed something in carelessly, sometimes an entirely random-looking sequence, purely to get past a mandatory field. Demographic mix-ups happen too. A similar name or address between two people can occasionally cross wires in the bureau's matching logic. And every so often you'll spot a number that's simply invalid on its face, too few digits, too many, or formatted in a way that couldn't belong to anyone.
Knowing which of these applies to you isn't strictly necessary to raise the correction, but it does help you word the dispute more precisely.
How to Get It Corrected
Start with the standard CIBIL dispute, flagging it under Contact Information and entering the correct number. If that alone doesn't resolve it, follow up with the online complaint method or a direct email to CIBIL. Most cases genuinely do get sorted at this stage.
If it still isn't resolved, CIBIL will typically let you know which lender actually reported the number, which tells you exactly who to email next. If the number turns out to be genuinely unknown or the issue is otherwise unclear, CIBIL may be able to resolve it from their end directly. But if email alone doesn't move things along, the next step is visiting the lender's branch in person with valid KYC documents. A mobile number is treated a bit differently from most other fields here, since it's the number tied to accessing your digital banking and profile. Because of that sensitivity, physical verification is often genuinely mandatory rather than something that can be sorted entirely over email.
If 30 days pass with no resolution, escalate through CPGRAMS first, and the RBI Ombudsman after that if CPGRAMS doesn't move things along either.

Quick Recap
A wrong or unrecognised mobile number on your CIBIL report is usually a small, fixable data issue rather than anything alarming. A typo, an outdated entry, or occasionally careless data entry on someone else's end. Start with the standard dispute, follow up with an email to CIBIL if needed, and email the lender directly once you know who reported it. Because a mobile number connects to your actual digital banking access, don't be surprised if a branch visit with your KYC documents ends up being the step that actually resolves it. And if nothing moves after 30 days, CPGRAMS and then the RBI Ombudsman are there to keep it going.
Frequently Asked Questions
My old number still works and I still get OTPs on it. Do I need to get it changed anyway?
Not urgently, no. If a number is old but still genuinely yours and still functional, it isn't really an error, it's just outdated. It's still worth updating for accuracy's sake, but there's no fraud risk in the way there is with a number you don't recognise at all.
Why would I need to visit a branch in person just to fix a phone number?
Because a mobile number isn't treated like most other report fields. It's directly tied to accessing your digital banking and account profile. That sensitivity is exactly why lenders often insist on physical KYC verification for this specific correction rather than resolving it purely through email.
I don't recognise any of the wrong numbers on my report at all. Could this be something more serious?
It's worth taking seriously, though it's not automatically fraud. An unrecognised number is often just a data-entry error or a demographic mix-up at the lender or bureau's end. That said, if it's paired with other unfamiliar details on your report, it's worth checking more carefully rather than assuming it's routine.
How long should I wait before escalating to CPGRAMS?
Give it a full 30 days after your initial dispute or email before escalating. If CPGRAMS doesn't resolve it either, the RBI Ombudsman is the next and final step.
Will CIBIL actually tell me which lender reported the wrong number?
In many cases, yes. But if the standard dispute or online complaint doesn't resolve it outright, CIBIL will often point you toward the reporting lender, which is exactly the information you need to email them directly instead of guessing.
Can the standard dispute alone fix this, or do I always need to send an email too?
The standard dispute resolves plenty of cases on its own. The email route is worth adding when the dispute doesn't fully resolve things, or when you'd simply rather have a documented request on record from the start rather than relying on the dispute portal alone.
