CIBIL Name Correction: Fix Wrong Name in CIBIL Report

Opening your CIBIL report to find your own name spelled wrong, duplicated, or mixed up with your father's name is a strange kind of unsettling. It's such a basic detail that seeing it wrong makes you wonder what else on the report might not be quite right. Plenty of people message us convinced their identity had been stolen, when it turned out to be nothing more than a repeated word in a data field. The good news is that this is one of the more straightforward things to get corrected, once you know the right steps.

Why an Inaccurate Name Ends Up on Your Report

A wrong name on your CIBIL report almost never means anything fraudulent. It's usually just how the data got entered somewhere along the way. Sometimes it's a straight typo at the lender's end while filling in your loan or card application. Sometimes it's an accidental duplication, something like "Rahul Sharma Sharma," where a field got repeated by mistake, or a father's name or middle name mixed in, so instead of "Rahul Sharma," the report shows "Rahul Ramdas Sharma," pulling in a parent's name straight from a KYC document. Other times it's simply inconsistent spelling across lenders. One bank has you as "Rahul" and another as "Rahull," and CIBIL just reflects whatever each institution actually sent. A legal name change after marriage that hasn't been updated with every lender individually causes the same thing, and so do transliteration differences, especially when a document originally in a regional language gets converted to English slightly differently across different forms.

None of these need to be dramatic to cause a real problem.

Why This Is Worth Fixing, Not Shrugging Off

A name mismatch between your CIBIL report and your current ID documents can genuinely slow things down when it matters most. KYC verification during a new loan or credit card application can stall or get flagged for manual review, a lender's system may struggle to confidently match you to your own credit history, and on the surface it can even look like two different people's data got mixed together, when it's simply your own file. Repeated small inconsistencies like this across your reports can make your overall credit profile look less reliable than it actually is, even when nothing else is genuinely wrong.

It's a small detail with an outsized ability to cause friction at the worst possible moment, right when you're trying to get approved for something.

How to Fix a Wrong Name on Your CIBIL Report

Step 1: Start With the Standard Dispute or Online Complaint

For something as clear-cut as a name correction, the standard CIBIL dispute inside your account is worth trying first. Flag it under Personal Information, enter your correct name, and submit.

If that route doesn't apply to your situation, or doesn't resolve it, CIBIL's online complaint method is a solid next move, no login required, and more room to explain the specifics.

A genuinely useful thing can happen here even if the correction doesn't go through immediately: CIBIL will often tell you which lender actually reported the incorrect name in the first place. That's worth paying attention to, since it tells you exactly who to contact directly instead of guessing.

Step 2: Email CIBIL Directly

If the dispute or complaint doesn't fully resolve things, or you'd rather have a documented email on record from the start, write to CIBIL directly. This can run alongside Step 1 rather than only after it.

Head to our drafting tool and select:

Select Who to contact, then Credit Bureau, then Individual, then CIBIL, then issue type: Inaccurate Name Reported

Here's what that generates:

Subject: Dispute Regarding Inaccurate Name on CIBIL Report - CIBIL Control Number: 2446475481

Dear CIBIL Team,

I am writing to formally dispute an inaccurate name appearing on my CIBIL Credit Information Report (CIR). My personal details and report information are as follows: PAN: KKAPN9874N, Aadhar Number: 8945 12657 4521, Mobile Number: 9804898456, Address: 75C Purana Mandir, Old Delhi - 155421, CIBIL Control Number: 2446475481.

The incorrect name currently on my report is Rahul Kumar Sharma, and my correct name is Rahul Sharma.

I respectfully request a thorough investigation into this matter and the prompt correction of my name on my credit report.

Relevant supporting documents are attached for your reference.

Kindly provide an update on the resolution of this dispute at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,
Rahul Sharma

Attach the following along with it:

  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • CIBIL Credit Report
  • Proof of Correct Name (PAN Card / Passport)

Step 3: Contact the Lender That Actually Reported It

Once you know which lender is the source, either from CIBIL's response or your own account history, reaching out to them directly is often what actually resolves it, since they're the one sending data to the bureau in the first place.

Go back to the drafting tool and select:

Select Who to contact, then Bank or Lender, search for the lender (for example, Punjab National Bank), then issue type: Inaccurate Name Reported

Here's the kind of email it generates:

To: care@pnb.co.in, complaint@pnb.co.in

Attach these along with it:

  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Proof of Correct Name (PAN Card / Passport)

Step 4: If Nothing Changes, Escalate

Give both emails a few weeks, up to 30 days. If neither CIBIL nor the lender has responded or corrected it, the next step is CPGRAMS, reachable through our escalation page. It puts your complaint on an official, trackable record.

If that still doesn't resolve it, the RBI Ombudsman is the final step, also available on the same escalation page. That said, you'll rarely need to go this far. A name correction is usually one of the more straightforward fixes, and most cases get resolved in the earlier steps.

Does This Happen on Other Bureaus Too?

Yes, a wrong name can just as easily show up on your Experian, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark report, independently of CIBIL, since each bureau maintains its own record. The same approach applies. Bureau first, then the specific lender, using the drafting tool with that bureau selected instead.

Simply Put

A wrong name on your CIBIL report is one of the easier things to fix, as long as you go about it in the right order. Try the standard dispute or online complaint first, it often resolves on its own, and even when it doesn't, it can point you toward the lender responsible. From there, a documented email to both CIBIL and that lender, with your ID proof attached, usually gets it sorted. And if it drags on longer than it should, CPGRAMS and the RBI Ombudsman are there to keep it moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

My name shows differently across two of my loan accounts. Is that a problem?

It can be, even if each version is close to correct. Lenders report exactly what was entered on your application, so small inconsistencies, a middle name included on one, left out on another, are common. It's worth getting all of them aligned to what's on your official ID.

Does a small spelling difference really matter, or is this overkill?

It matters more than it seems. Even a minor mismatch can cause a lender's system to hesitate during identity verification, which can slow down or complicate a new application. It's a small fix that removes a genuinely avoidable source of friction.

One of my accounts shows my father's name attached to mine. Why would that happen?

This usually happens when a KYC document with a father's or parent's name listed gets pulled into the record incorrectly, producing something like "Rahul Ramdas Sharma" instead of just "Rahul Sharma." It's a straightforward correction once you flag it with proof of your actual name.

I changed my name after marriage. Does this same process work for that?

Yes, the process is the same, though you'll want to include your marriage certificate or the relevant legal name-change document alongside your PAN or passport as proof of the new name.

How do I find out which lender actually reported the wrong name?

Raising the standard dispute or online complaint with CIBIL is the easiest way to find out. Even if it doesn't resolve the issue outright, CIBIL will often tell you which institution's reporting is the source, which tells you exactly who to contact directly next.

Do I need to fix this separately on every bureau, or does one correction cover all of them?

Separately, unfortunately. CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, and CRIF Highmark each maintain their own record, so a correction on one doesn't automatically carry over to the others. It's worth checking all four if the same lender has reported to more than one.
