Closed Loan Still Showing Active in CIBIL? How to Fix It

You paid off or closed your loan. You even breathed a little easier once that last EMI cleared. Then you check your CIBIL report and find the same account sitting there, marked "Active," as if none of that ever happened.

This is more common than people think, and it's genuinely worth fixing rather than shrugging off. It happens even to accounts closed years ago, sitting there quietly until someone finally notices. A closed loan showing as active isn't just a cosmetic mistake. It can quietly work against you the next time you apply for credit.

Why This Actually Happens

Most of the time, it isn't fraud or anything sinister. Usually the lender took your payment but simply hasn't updated CIBIL yet, since this reporting isn't instant. Sometimes a small technical error slips in when the closure gets reported, or the paperwork on the lender's end never fully goes through. Occasionally it's just timing, and your loan closure and the bureau's monthly reporting cycle miss each other by a matter of days.

Whatever the reason, the account stays incorrect until someone actively pushes for the correction. It won't fix itself.

Why This Is Worth Fixing, Not Ignoring

An account still marked active means a lender reading your report sees an ongoing loan you're supposedly still paying, even though you're not in reality. That can inflate how much existing debt a new lender thinks you're carrying, throw off your credit utilisation if it's a card rather than a loan, and dent your overall eligibility for a fresh application. It can also cause plain confusion during bank verification, simply because the numbers on paper don't add up to what you're actually telling them.

None of this is permanent, but it can absolutely cause an unnecessary rejection or delay while it sits uncorrected.

Step 1: Try the Standard Dispute or Online Complaint First

For a straightforward case like this, the loan is closed, the paperwork is done, and the report just hasn't caught up, the standard CIBIL dispute inside your account is often enough on its own. Flag the account, mark the correct status, and submit.

If your report is older, came from a third-party platform, or the standard dispute route isn't cooperating, CIBIL's online complaint method is a solid alternative. It doesn't need a login and gives you more room to explain exactly what happened.

A good number of these cases genuinely get sorted at this stage without needing anything further.

Step 2: Email CIBIL Directly

If the dispute or complaint above doesn't move things along, or if you'd simply rather have a documented email on record from the start, write to CIBIL directly. This can be done alongside Step 1 rather than only after it, especially if you want both channels working at once.

Head to our drafting tool and select:

Select Who to contact, then Credit Bureau, then Individual, then CIBIL, then issue type: Closed Loan/Credit Card Still Showing Active

Here's what that generates:

Subject: Dispute Regarding Closed Loan Account Still Showing Active on CIBIL Report - CIBIL Control Number: 2446475481

Dear CIBIL Team,

I am writing to formally dispute a closed Loan account that is still being reported as active on my CIBIL Credit Information Report (CIR). My personal details and report information are as follows: Name: Rahul Sharma, Address: 75C Purana Mandir, Old Delhi - 155421, PAN: KKAPN9874N, Aadhar Number: 8945 12657 4521, Mobile Number: 9856231478, CIBIL Control Number: 2446475481.

The details of the disputed account are as follows:
Bank/NBFC Name: Canara Bank
Account Type: Loan
Account Number: 5444415544
Date of Sanction: 2024-03-12
Date of Closure: 2026-06-17

I confirm that this Loan account was closed on 2026-06-17 and all obligations have been met. However, it is erroneously being reported as active. I request that you investigate this matter with the concerned member institution and ensure the prompt update of the status of this account to 'Closed' on my credit report, within the stipulated timeframe under the applicable regulations.

Relevant supporting documents are attached for your reference.

Kindly provide an update on the resolution of this dispute at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,
Rahul Sharma

Attach the following along with it:

  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • CIBIL Credit Report
  • Final Payment Receipt or No Objection Certificate (NOC)

Step 3: Bring the Lender In Too

Whether you send this at the same time as Step 2 or only once the bureau side alone hasn't resolved it, the lender is worth contacting directly as well. They're the one actually reporting the status, so a correction on their end carries real weight.

Go back to the drafting tool and select:

Select Who to contact, then Bank or Lender, search for your lender (for example, Canara Bank), then issue type: Closed Loan/Credit Card Still Showing Active

Fill in your name, PAN, address, account number, the sanctioned amount, and the date the account was actually closed. Here's the kind of email it generates:

Step 4: If Nothing Changes, Escalate

Give both emails some time, up to 20 to 30 days is a fair window. If neither the lender nor CIBIL has moved on it, don't just keep waiting.

The next step is CPGRAMS, the government's grievance platform, which you can reach through our escalation page. It asks for the same details as the drafting tool, plus when you first contacted the lender and what response you got. This puts your complaint on an official, trackable record.

If CPGRAMS still doesn't resolve it, the RBI Ombudsman is the last step, also available on the same escalation page.

Does This Happen on Other Bureaus Too?

Yes, a closed account can just as easily still show as active on your Experian, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark report. The fix is the same idea. Email the lender and the bureau together, using the drafting tool with that bureau selected instead of CIBIL, and follow the same escalation steps if needed.

The Short Version

A closed loan still showing active is almost always a simple reporting gap, not a real debt you owe. Fix it by contacting the lender and the bureau at the same time, with your payment proof or NOC attached to both. Give it a week or two, and if nothing moves, CPGRAMS and then the RBI Ombudsman are there to push it along. It's a small correction, but leaving it alone can quietly cost you at exactly the wrong moment, like the middle of a new loan application.

Frequently Asked Questions

I paid off my loan months ago. Why is it still showing as active?

Most of the time, it's simply a reporting gap. The lender hasn't updated CIBIL yet, or something small went wrong when they tried to report the closure. It doesn't usually mean you owe anything, it just needs to be corrected.

Does this actually hurt my credit score?

It can, indirectly. A lender reading your report may think you're still carrying that loan, which affects how much existing debt they believe you have. For a credit card, it can also throw off your utilisation numbers. It's worth fixing rather than ignoring.

Should I contact CIBIL or the lender first?

Start with CIBIL, try the standard dispute or the online complaint route first, since a good number of these simple cases get sorted right there. If that doesn't resolve it, or you'd rather move faster, email CIBIL and the lender together. The lender is the one who actually reports the status, so bringing them in matters too, just not necessarily first.

What documents do I actually need?

Your PAN and Aadhaar, a recent copy of your credit report, and proof that the loan is closed. Either your final payment receipt or an NOC from the lender. If the account was settled rather than fully closed, include that settlement letter too.

How long should I wait before escalating?

Give it about 20 to 30 days after sending both emails. If there's still no update after that, move on to CPGRAMS, and the RBI Ombudsman after that if it's still not sorted.

Can the same thing happen on Experian, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark?

Yes, it's not limited to CIBIL. The fix works the same way on any of the four bureaus. Email the lender and that specific bureau together, and escalate the same way if you don't get a response.
