Written-Off Status in Experian Credit Report: Remove It

Experian tends to be the report fintechs and digital lenders lean on most, since it's built for faster data turnaround than the others. That makes a Written-off remark here a bit more consequential than people expect. If you're applying for an instant personal loan or a BNPL-style credit line, the lender assessing you is often reading exactly this report, and a Written-off account sitting on it can quietly work against an approval that would otherwise have gone through fine.

What Written-Off Actually Means Here

We've gone into more depth on this in our guide on removing Written-off status from a CIBIL report, and the underlying idea carries over to Experian without much change. The lender has declared the outstanding amount a loss on their own books, but that's an accounting decision, not a closure. Your obligation to repay doesn't disappear along with it, and interest can keep accumulating on the balance the entire time the remark sits there uncorrected.

On an Experian report specifically, this shows up under the Credit Facility Status field we've covered in our guide to reading Experian reports, in a healthy account, that field is blank, and Written-off is one of the more serious things that can appear there instead.

Before doing anything else, make sure the account is genuinely yours. If it isn't, this becomes a different kind of correction entirely, and our guide on unknown accounts covers that process properly.

Two Different Starting Points

Same as with CIBIL, where you stand with the account changes what the fix actually looks like. Either you've already cleared the dues and the remark just hasn't caught up, or you're still working out how to close it.

If You've Already Paid in Full

Experian does run its own dispute portal for general corrections, though it comes with a catch worth knowing, it only accepts reports under 90 days old, and needs your ERN and UTI to process anything. If your report is older than that, or you'd simply rather not deal with the portal, a direct email works just as well and doesn't depend on report age at all.

Head to our drafting tool and select Credit Bureau, Individual, Experian, Remove Settled/Written-off Status. Here's the kind of email it generates:

Attach your PAN, Aadhaar, a copy of your Experian report, and your payment proof or NOC alongside this.

Don't stop at Experian, either, email the lender directly too, confirming the same payment and asking them to report the correction. Here's the kind of email that goes out, using Punjab National Bank as the example, with your details and the account details swapped in:

To: care@pnb.co.in, complaint@pnb.co.in

If You Haven't Paid Yet

Here the sequence flips, start with the lender rather than Experian, since there's no amount to dispute until you know what you actually owe. A branch visit or a call to customer care can get you a rough figure, though a documented email tends to be the more reliable way to actually pin down the exact foreclosure amount and get it in writing. Here's the kind of email that goes out for this situation:

To: care@pnb.co.in, complaint@pnb.co.in

Subject: Request for Foreclosure/Clean-up Amount to Resolve Written-off Status on Loan Account: 54444155444

Dear Punjab National Bank (PNB) Customer Service,

I am writing regarding my Loan account, which is currently being reported with a status of "Written-off" on my credit report. My personal details are as follows:

Name: Rahul Sharma
Address: Plot No. 42, 3rd Main Road, Sector 5, HSR Layout, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560102
PAN: KKAPN9874N

Mobile Number: 9615809745

The details of the account are as follows:
Account Type: Loan
Account Number: 54444155444
Account Status Reported: Written-off

I wish to clear the outstanding dues on this account and have this status corrected on my credit report. I kindly request you to share the exact foreclosure/settlement (clean-up) amount payable, along with the available payment options (e.g., online payment link, bank transfer/NEFT details, or branch payment), so that I may complete the payment at the earliest.

Once the payment is made, I request that you issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC), and ensure that the account's status/remark field reported to the credit bureaus is updated to Blank, with a NIL outstanding balance and no adverse remark of "Written-off" or any similar negative status. I request that this negative remark be cleared and left blank entirely, rather than merely updated or amended.

Relevant supporting documents are attached for your reference.

Kindly confirm in writing the exact status that will be reported to the credit bureaus once the payment is received.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.

Rahul Sharma

Documents to attach:

  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Latest Credit Report Copy (from any bureau) The one thing worth repeating: never pay a discounted amount without written confirmation that it clears the record properly rather than logging as Settled instead, since that trades one negative remark for another.

Once the lender confirms and you pay, keep every email in that same thread, and email Experian as well using the "already paid" template above, since the lender agreeing doesn't automatically mean Experian's own record gets updated.

What to Actually Expect After You Send These Emails

Once your email goes out, a few different things can happen next, and it helps to know what each one means rather than reading too much into any single response.

The lender may refuse to share any account details at all if the email you're writing from isn't the one registered against the loan. This is standard caution on their part, not a rejection. If this happens, your best move is visiting the branch with valid KYC documents and getting your email updated on record, then sending the request again.

The lender may simply tell you to visit the branch to sort this out, instead of replying in detail over email. Go, and carry a printed or saved copy of their email response with you. Even if the branch visit itself doesn't resolve things on the spot, you've followed the proper process, and that documented trail works in your favour if you need to escalate later.

The lender may ask for more time to look into the matter, or ask for additional documents before they can proceed. This is routine, cooperate and send whatever they ask for promptly, since a quick response from your side keeps the case moving.

The lender may actually share the foreclosure amount you asked for, sometimes along with the payment options too. If this happens, go ahead and make the payment, but do it carefully, double-check the account number, the amount, and the payment mode before confirming anything.

Once the payment goes through, reply on that same email thread, don't start a fresh one, and attach the payment receipt there itself. Ask them clearly for the prompt removal of the Written-off status based on this payment. Keeping everything in one thread means the lender can see the full history in one place, your original request, their response, and now your proof of payment, which makes it harder for the request to get lost or reset back to square one. Don't delete this thread at any point either, you'll likely need to refer back to it if things don't move as fast as they should.

Once the payment is made, make sure the lender clears every related negative flag, not just the Written-off status itself, but the Written-off Total and Written-off Principal amounts too, and issues your NOC. A correction that removes the "Written-off" label but leaves the written-off amount fields populated isn't a complete fix, so it's worth checking that all of it has actually been cleared.

If It's Still Not Resolved

Give it a proper 15 to 20 days before assuming nothing's happening. If it's still stuck after that, escalate through CPGRAMS, and the RBI Ombudsman after that if CPGRAMS doesn't move it along either.

Does This Show Up on Other Bureaus Too?

It can, independently. The same lender may have reported the same Written-off status to CIBIL, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark as well, and since these four bureaus rarely reflect identical data at the same time, it's worth checking whether the remark carried over before assuming a fix on Experian alone covers you.

Two Paths, Same Outcome

Whether you're waiting for a payment to reflect or still working out what you owe, a Written-off remark on Experian follows the same logic it does everywhere else, it's fixable, it just needs the right sequence. Confirm the account is genuinely yours, figure out which of the two situations you're actually in, and work the email chain accordingly, with Experian and the lender both in the loop rather than just one or the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Experian's dispute portal work the same way as CIBIL's for a Written-off correction?

Not quite. Experian's portal needs your ERN and UTI, and only accepts reports under 90 days old. If your report is older, or you'd rather skip the login, the direct email route to Experian's nodal officers works regardless of report age.

I already fixed this on my CIBIL report, does that cover Experian too?

No, each bureau maintains its own independent record. A correction on CIBIL has no automatic effect on Experian, so the same Written-off remark may still need its own separate fix here.

Why does a Written-off status on Experian specifically matter for instant loans or BNPL credit?

Because Experian tends to be the report fintechs and digital lenders check most, given how fast the data moves compared to the other bureaus. A Written-off remark here can affect exactly the kind of quick-approval credit that relies on this report.

Should I contact Experian or the lender first?

Depends which situation you're in. If you've already paid, email Experian and the lender around the same time. If you haven't paid yet, start with the lender, since you need the foreclosure amount before there's anything to correct with Experian at all.

What if the lender offers to settle for less than I owe?

Get it confirmed in writing first that the account will still close properly rather than get reported as Settled instead. A discount without that written confirmation can leave you with a different negative remark in place of the one you just cleared.

How long should I wait before escalating to CPGRAMS?

Give it 15 to 20 days after your documented email. If it's still unresolved past that, CPGRAMS is the next step, with the RBI Ombudsman as the final one if that doesn't help either.
