Wrong Address on Credit Report: CIBIL Correction | Credit Reveals

Not every old address on your CIBIL report is a mistake. That's the point most people miss before they start disputing things, and it's worth getting straight before anything else in this guide, because chasing every unfamiliar-looking address as if it's an error wastes time and sometimes weakens a dispute that's actually valid.

So let's separate the two situations properly.

Old and Wrong Are Not the Same Thing

An address from three jobs ago, a rented flat you moved out of years back, your parents' place you listed on a form once, none of that is automatically an error. If you genuinely lived there, worked there, or gave that address to a lender at some point, CIBIL is well within reason to still be holding onto it. The bureau can carry more than one address reported by different lenders across different years, and a report with five addresses spanning a decade isn't broken, it's just a history.

What actually makes for a dispute is an address you never lived at, never worked from, and never gave to anyone in connection with any credit account you hold. That's a genuinely different category, and it's the one worth acting on.

Where a Genuinely Wrong Address Comes From

A lot of these trace back to the same moment, someone entering your details during a loan or credit card application got it wrong, whether that's a straightforward typo or, in some cases, an agent filling in a placeholder address that was never actually yours to begin with, just to get the form through. From there, that incorrect entry can sit quietly in the lender's own customer records for years, getting reported to CIBIL again each time, long after anyone would think to check it.

Because CIBIL receives personal information separately from every lender you've dealt with, conflicting addresses across accounts are also fairly normal, each institution reports whatever it has, independently of the others. Occasionally the mismatch is internal to a single lender too, where their KYC file and their credit-reporting record simply don't agree with each other, even though both supposedly describe you.

One specific pattern worth knowing: CIBIL's report structure distinguishes between different address categories, and sometimes what should be tagged as an office or other address ends up showing as your personal residence instead, or the reverse. That's a classification error rather than a factual one, but it's still worth correcting, since it can misrepresent your actual living situation.

And in rarer cases, none of the above applies, the address genuinely belongs to someone else entirely, pointing to a data-matching or ownership issue rather than a simple entry mistake.

Getting It Corrected

Start with the standard CIBIL dispute under Contact Information, or the online complaint method if your report is older or came from elsewhere. Be specific in how you describe the issue, "this address is old" isn't a strong basis for a dispute, but "I have never lived at or been associated with this address" is.

A quick note before the templates below: these are worked examples built around a fictional person, not something to copy and send exactly as written. Every name, PAN, address, and control number needs to be replaced with your own before anything goes out, think of these as a structure to follow, not a form to fill in with someone else's details.

Emailing CIBIL Directly

Our drafting tool handles this under Credit Bureau, Individual, CIBIL, Inaccurate Address Reported. Here's the kind of email it generates:

Emailing the Lender That Reported It

Once you know which lender the address traces back to, write to them directly as well, same logic as always, since they're the actual source of the data CIBIL is reflecting. Here's the kind of email that goes out, using SBI as the worked example this time:

To: contactcentre@sbi.co.in, customercare@sbi.co.in, gm.customer@sbi.co.in

If the Address Is Misclassified Rather Than Wrong

If the actual address is correct but it's showing up under the wrong category, an office listed as your residence, say, say exactly that in your dispute rather than framing it as a wrong address. You're not asking CIBIL to remove or replace anything here, just to re-tag which type of address it actually is. That distinction helps whoever reviews the dispute resolve it faster, since they're not hunting for a discrepancy that isn't really there.

If It's Still Not Resolved

Escalate through CPGRAMS if the dispute and email route don't resolve things, and the RBI Ombudsman after that if CPGRAMS doesn't help either, same sequence as every other correction covered on this site.

Does This Apply to Other Bureaus?

Yes, independently, Experian, Equifax, and CRIF Highmark each maintain their own address history, built from the same lenders. A correction on CIBIL doesn't carry over automatically, so it's worth checking the others too if the same wrong address matters to you across the board.

The Right Question to Ask

Before disputing an address on your CIBIL report, ask yourself one thing: did I ever actually live there, work there, or give this address to a lender, even years ago? If the honest answer is yes, it's not an error, just history. If the answer is genuinely no, that's when a dispute is worth filing, and worth filing clearly, describing exactly why the address has no connection to you rather than just calling it old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I dispute every old address on my report just to clean it up?

No, and this is worth resisting the urge to do. An old address you genuinely once had is normal and doesn't need removing. Save your dispute effort for an address you can honestly say you've never had any connection to.

My office address is showing up as my home address, is that worth fixing?

Yes, though it's a slightly different kind of correction than a wrong address entirely. Frame it as a misclassification, the address itself is accurate, it's just tagged under the wrong category, rather than disputing it as incorrect information.

Why do I see three or four different addresses on my report at once?

Because each lender you've held an account with reports independently, and CIBIL holds onto what each one submitted rather than merging everything into a single current address. Multiple addresses spanning different years is completely normal.

Can I use the example emails in this guide exactly as written?

No, those are worked examples built around a fictional name and address to show you the structure. Every detail needs to be replaced with your own before you send anything; sending the example as-is won't identify your actual account or dispute.

How do I know if an unfamiliar address points to a bigger problem than a data entry error?

If it's the only thing off on an otherwise familiar report, it's most likely a simple mismatch. If it's showing up alongside accounts or other personal details you also don't recognise, that combination is worth treating more seriously as a possible data-matching or ownership issue rather than an address error on its own.

Does correcting my address with CIBIL fix it on my other bureau reports too?

No. Each bureau keeps its own independent record, so the same wrong address may still need a separate correction with Experian, Equifax, or CRIF Highmark if it's sitting on those reports as well................
